Vahid Razavi and Atraktor Graphic Studio are proud to announce their participation in this year’s 14th Los Angeles Times Festival of Books taking place Saturday and Sunday, April 25 &26, 2009, at the UCLA Main Campus. They will be presenting a book called The Age of Nepotism, a unique fusion of written word and highly artistic graphic work, crafted to cary the authors universal message to the readers through a new format of media. At the country’s largest and most prestigeous book event, „Nepotism“ will reveal its secrets to the american reading audience.

About the book:
How can a simple traveler contribute to a positive change in the world that we live in? Can we all enhance our consciousness and stop the prejudice towards people that we consider different? What should be a new face of entrepreneurship concerning small businesses? Author, Vahid Razavi, answers these questions and many more in The Age of Nepotism.

Belgrade Pops Orchestra in Concert

Some time ago, I wrote about creating a visual identity for Belgrade Pops Orchestra. Now their first concert is fast approaching, and thus I have a lot of things to define. I just setup a wordpress website for a dear friend and a long-time collaborator Tatjana Tatalovic. She is a fashion designer based in Belgrade, Serbia (like me) and has some really cool wardrobe to show. Nice models also

I used a Wordpress theme by Greg Johnson called Wp Coda Blue , a really interesting one.

This is quite the simplest site, consisting only of several pictures from the new collection, but more stuff will be coming there soon and the ones that are there are really worth seeing.

Belgrade Pops Orchestra

One of the new projects I did was a complete visual identity for Belgrade Pops Orchestra. It is a specific kind of orchestra, since it has the same structure as many symphonic orchestras, but plays more contemporary music. Their music is a nice combination of classic and modern, strong but elegant, so I tried to incorporate those elements into the logo. The symbol representing a musical instrument is very stylized and clean-cut, resembling a calligraphic symbol. That’s were the inspiration came from, since calligraphy and music have a lot in common: rhytm, flow and harmony in the first place.

Typography went through a couple of iterations – at first, I chose a heavy, bold black font, but over time decided it will work better with Anivers, a font that has a poetic touch, but stays stable and clean in its structure. Thanks to the best design magazine out there – Smashing Magazine, for providing the font. I created the cyrilic version myself (actually just a couple of letters that I needed).

National Association of Pharmacy Students of Serbia

NAPSER

This is the proposition for the logo for NAPSER, the National Association of Pharmacy Students of Serbia. The logo has been done with the idea of representing a snake (which is an intenational symbol for pharmacy) and representing the Association as an educational institution. This is done by combining several elements:

The blue color – soothing and yet fresh enough to point out that the Association is about young people;

The snake – stylized in a modern way and yet not looking evil

Serif font – pointing out the University component of the Association

There have been several propositions for the logo, but this one is the most complete so it made the way to Atraktor Studio’s portfolio.

This piece is one of my favorite illustrations. It has been developed for a long period of time, bit by bit, and it seems like it is never completed. Maybe I will leave it like this, possibly I will do a vector version when I have the time.

Since I was overwhelmed with a lot of design work recently, I had to find a way to let out the steam and ease the pressure on my pulsing brain. The best way I found so far is sketching by hand. Sometimes with a pen, sometimes with a marker, but usually in black and white, or just a couple of colors. This is really a kind of an art therapy – when I get sick of coding, aligning, clean corporate designs, I turn to my dirty sketches. some of them end up being vectorized for further application: t-shirts, posters, small prints etc. and some stay just as they are. I scan them, do a little or no adjusting at all and that’s it.

The piece presented here is one of the most recent vectorized sketches. It is inspired by long lasting obsession with the ‘Space Village Concept’. Robots and other machine-like creatures in the middle of a battle.

Ski Cross kopaonik - Poster

This is the key visual element – a poster for the Ski-Cross that is about to take place on mountain Kopaonik in Serbia this winter. I have also designed the logo for the competition with couple of things in mind: speed, adrenalin rush, grungy style that resembles snow cracks and playful expressions to catch the viewers attention

Ski-cross is a very interesting alpine skiing discipline – four or six skiers race down the bumpy slope full of obstacles, jumps and dangerous curves at the same time. Helmets are obligatory.

Beck’s beer – music magazine ads

Beck's Beer - Vignettes for YellowCab Magazine

It seems that a lot of my work is inevitably connected to beer. Once again I had a task of connecting the beer brand with music – this time for it was a series of ads and vignettes for a lifestyle magazine. The brief was to brand the magazine’s music pages with a couple of rather simple vignettes and two full-page and half-page ads, visually connect Beck’s beer and different music styles and genres.

Main idea was that each of the vignettes would represent different genre, so that the appropriate picture would be connected with the topic of the article on the page. It involved more work from my side, but made the branding look much more natural and unforced.
